For Sophie, small town life has never felt small. With her four best friends–loving, infuriating, and all she could ever ask for–she can weather any storm. But when Sophie’s beloved Acadia High School marching band is selected to march in the upcoming Rose Parade, it’s her job to get them all the way to LA. Her plan? To persuade country singer Megan Pleasant, their Midwestern town’s only claim to fame, to come back to Acadia to headline a fundraising festival.
The only problem is that Megan has very publicly sworn never to return.
What ensues is a journey filled with long-kept secrets, hidden heartbreaks, and revelations that could change everything–along with a possible fifth best friend: a new guy with a magnetic smile and secrets of his own.
What I Liked: There is nothing better than a new Emma Mills book out in the world.
I’m telling you, it’s here forever
♥ First of all, that cover. I don’t know what kind of offerings Emma makes to the cover gods, but they are well worth it. They are actual, literal art. I couldn’t even pick a favorite if you made me, but this one is up there. It’s gorgeous.
♥ The romances keep getting swoonier, so I always forget how well Emma writes friends. This group of five plus August is perfection. The way they so easily break off into two or three, the way they all know each other so well, the old jokes that have been around so long that they’ve turned into regular life, like Teen Zone 2.
♥ But also, the romance. It is swoony, it is real, and if you’re here for the kissing, there is more of it than you usually find in Emma’s books! Sophie and August are excellent together, and their immediate banter. “Fondest wishes.”
♥ The way Sophie would never let you know she doesn’t feel okay about something, because girl, same.
♥ Marching band love. Your girl here was in the color guard in high school, and we were also invited to march in the Rose Parade. It was one of my best high school experiences, and it is always lovely to be back in that world. I liked so much reading about drum majors, dot sheets, and the pain in the ass that is fundraising.
Guess how many times your girl was also hit in the head with a 6 foot aluminum pole crashing down from a failed toss? Hint: I mastered the art of covering up a black eye very quickly.
What I Didn’t: Nothing, honestly what could be wrong with an Emma Mills book.
⊗ Fine I wish there was even more book with even more kissing.
Favorite Quotes: “‘Were you eating cold lasagna?’
