Mini Review: This is SO FUN! What if we had offered George Washington a crown instead a presidency after winning the Revolutionary War? That’s the premise here, and two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still reigns. But for the first time, the first-born will become heir, rather than the first male. So Princess Beatrice has grown up knowing that she’ll be the first Queen one day, while her twin siblings, Samantha and Jefferson, get to pretty much just hang out and party.
This book is also full of amazing tropes, AND THESE ARE NOT EVEN ALL OF THEM: a commoner connected to royalty, oh no there’s only one bed, forbidden love, secret relationship, friends to lovers AND SO MUCH MORE!

“They were being reckless and foolish; they were tempting fate; they were breaking the rules; they were falling in love. Or they had fallen in love a long time ago, and only now had the chance to act on it.”

“‘Writers got to pick the endings of their novels, but Beatrice wasn’t living a story. She was living history, and history went on forever.”

There Will Come a Darkness, by Katy Rose Pool

Series?: The Age of Darkness #1

Length: 496 pages

Format: Paperback
Times Read: Once
Rating: 3/5

Mini Review: There are a ton of POVs, WHICH I GENERALLY LIKE, but the voices aren’t super distinct, and none of them join up for a really long time. Things didn’t really pick up until halfway for me, and I had figured out most of the twists from the beginning, so this one wasn’t a huge win for me. I had seen a lot of early comparison to Six of Crows, but do not believe that hype because they are nothing alike aside from having multiple POVs.

I didn’t love this, but I did get through all 496 pages of it, so that says something. It also has crazy high ratings already, so if you’ve been looking forward to it, definitely still give it a try!

“He’d been on his own since he was eleven years old, and in that time he’d traded parts of himself–dignity, virtue, a clear conscience, if he’d ever had those things–to save the whole. He hadn’t balked once.”

“Anton had done bad things before–ruthless things, selfish things–and while guilt always followed, it was never enough to stop him from doing such things again.”

Mini Review:
HI HELLO my name is Katie and I am complete trash for this book. I have it coming in two subscription boxes and still preordered it from B&N for the bonus content. This is the slowest burn, the most intense hate to love, the grayest of morally gray characters, the twistiest of twists, the sexiest of steamy scenes, the best best friend, and did I mention the slowest burn?
My actual notes that I took while reading this all in one sitting, after meaning to read only a few chapters and then looking up 528 pages later.
-Oh I like this!
-I’m a little confused about some parts, but it’s so good that I’m just going with it.
-So different than what I had in my head, but so much better!
-Lou is a delight.
-This simmer is getting SIZZZZLING like woooah, but I’m afraid of what happens when he finds out she’s a witch.
-Holy shit, *** ***** is who??? And **** is…wait, is ****….?!

In short, please get this book if you haven’t already pre-ordered it and then read it asap and come talk to me because I HAVE THINGS TO SAY!

“Reid eyed me incredulously. ‘You drink like a man.’
‘Maybe men can learn a thing or two from women.'”

“Why the fuck is everyone in this kingdom trying to murder my wife?”

Mini Review: I really liked Emergency Contact, but I loved this one. It’s all from Pablo’s POV, a college dropout who works the graveyard shift at an upscale New York bodega, has a passion for snacks, and no earthly idea what to do with himself. Try to go back to NYU, even though he’s drowning in a mountain of credit card debt? Get a better job? Move back in with his mom and little brother? And then one morning, Leanna Smart walks into the bodega, and nothing is the same again. It’s the dream scenario, until so often it’s not. The question I kept coming back to: Do we feel bad for this poor girl who has no agency over her own life, or do we recognize that none of this happens without her so she’s actually in charge? Once you’ve read it, let me know what you think of the end!

“Honestly, it scares me the way I end up living out the aftermath of decisions I don’t remember making.”

“Why did I pick the corn emoji????!!! Emoji in general are safe, but I should have sent the black heart. It’s less a heart-heart in the love sense and more just a badass pictograph that shows how much I care without seeming like a sap. But I’ve just always liked the corn emoji. IT’S A GOOD EMOJI.”

“They say you never forget your first time, but I wonder if that’s because the shame sticks with you forever and ever.”
