Top Ten Tuesday- Memorable Things Characters Have Said

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s topic is Memorable Things Characters Have Said (quotes from book characters that have stuck with you)

A running theme throughout the Illuminae Files series, this is something that the ship’s AI often wonders.

It’s a small moment said by a background character, but I always found it so funny. Irv is a huge football player, described as being so big that he doesn’t drink because he can’t get drunk, so what’s the point? And of course his size and strength make him the perfect choice to push the abandoned merry-go-round they hang out at in the middle of the woods.

I would say Ronan is my favorite character in The Raven Cycle, but it’s honestly too hard to choose just one because all of the boys are just so good. But snarky, sharp Ronan speaks to me deeply and I love the juxtaposition of using a curse to describe how civil he’s being.
Sawyer LeGrande. Have I loved him as long as Reena at this point? Unclear. He gets a lot of hate, both from everyone in How to Love, and from everyone online. But I’ve always seen him as such a complicated character. And such a kid. So young to have had his own kid, and so confusing to come home and suddenly learn that the kid exists, that she has been a reality and a living being for years while you were out in the world with no idea. But when he learns about her, he’s as all in as Reena will allow him to be, and I always get caught on this line. It’s not a sad scene, but there’s just such an undercurrent of disappointment.

I read this in Quintana of Charyn and have taken to saying variations of it to my husband over the years, as he is a “glass very half-empty” type of person. It’s like ‘look on the bright side,’ only less cliched and makes you think more.

I’ve written about this line from The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer before. I have written about it more than once before because it’s a very specific turning point in the book, and it just gets me every time.
I Hate Everyone But You is such a fun book. Told mostly through emails and text messages, it’s the story of two best friends during their first few months of college as they keep in touch from different cities and different schools. It was so reminiscent of my best friend and I (hi Laura!) during our college experience, living completely different lives but trying desperately to stay involved in each other’s.

*just a note: there was no cocaine involved in my (or Laura’s) college experiences. Alcohol, though. There was lots of alcohol.

Drew: not really a dick, but he plays one on TV. When he says this in The Sea of Tranquility, he’s talking to his best friend Josh, and he’s not kidding. He’s incredibly self-aware and he’s incredibly smart. He knows that the person he’s been playing is a shitty one, and he’s not happy to see his best friend repeat the same mistake. It’s a powerful line.

I love this line from the Throne of Glass series so much that I actually have a tattoo of it. It’s the last line of the first book, and the last spoken line of the last book.

Good ol’ Chubs. One of the best parts about The Darkest Minds series for sure. I love when he says this to Ruby in Never Fade, they have such a great friendship and never try to mess with it by chancing a relationship or anything.

Great question! I love that the one in KoA is such a quiet nod to ToG, and how it just closes things so cleanly. But mainly I love how to me it means “it can wait.” Whatever it is, nothing is so important that you have to stop everything and do it immediately

Well first off, how have I not found you before? I use to have Pugs, and I absolutely love the breed and I love reading so we have two things in common right there.

I love that you used the graphics with the quotes. Great list here.
